Rescue Your Spruce
If you see yellow spots on your spruce that has dwelled in a container near your entryway, obviously this evergreen conifer is alerting you that it is having a problem. People choose this tree to provide continuous color throughout the year, but unfortunately they know too little to keep the plants healthy.
Potted evergreens need good amount of water regularly. They prefer sunny areas of the garden and are sensitive to frost damage.
How would you know if your plant is giving you clues that it needs rescuing?
a. Leaf discoloration, leaf drop, damaged foliage; plant has white webbing attached to it.
b. The leaves are turning yellow/brown.
c. The leaves are turning yellow/brown/black.
What do these clues tell you?
a. Plant has an infestation of spider mites.
b. Too much or too little water. Check soil moisture.
c. It has frost damage.
To kill spider mites, you can use a mixture of soap and water; also spray the shrub forcefully to wash the mites off the plant. There are pesticides that you can purchase at your local garden center that will also rid the shrub of infestation.
Give you potted spruce a good dose of water when it needed, estimate soil moisture regularly. Though spruce likes sandy substrate, the soil should not be allowed to dry out. You can decide to use a product that supports the root system. Your local garden center can suggest the right product and will instruct you regarding its application.
Evergreens are best located in areas, where they can receive sun. They are prone to a moderate wind. The spruce in ceramic or plastic containers should be protected in the areas, where weather gets extremely cold in the winter. You can put bubble wrap or burlap around the container to isolate it from the freezing air. Build a windbreaker around the plant or put it in a protected area to prevent the chill damage.
