Why are my mini roses` leaves turning yellow?

Miniature roses are a beautiful addition to any home.  Miniature roses are available in a number of colors:  red, yellow, pink, peach, orange, white, yellow, and any number of combinations.  However, these lovely plants can be challenging.  These lovely flowers can be trained to climb a trellis.

Yellow leaves can be a sign of stress.  Lack of sunlight, dry soil, too much water, and dry air are all sources of stress to a miniature rose plant.  Gently pinch off the yellow leaves to encourage healthy growth.  Place the plant in a room or near a window where it can receive plenty of sunlight.  These plants require six to eight hours of direct sun a day.  Normally, a southern facing room or window provides the right amount of sun.

Avoid watering the roses every day.  The soil should remain moist, not too dry or wet.  Touch the soil with an index finger; if soil sticks to the finger the plant has plenty of water.  A good rule of thumb is to water the plant every other day.  When watering, take care not to over water, add only enough water to absorb into the soil, a quarter of a cup of water is plenty.

Air circulation discourages pests, dust, and dirt from collecting on the plant.  The addition of a humidifier can keep the right of amount of moisture in the air.  Temperature should be kept above 60 degrees to keep the plant from going dormant.  Keep in mind that these roses will need a period of dormancy.  Simply place the plant in an unheated basement or garage from the end of October to January.  This period of dormancy allows the plant a natural period of rest and preparation for new growth.

In January, re-pot the plant in fresh soil and a slightly larger container.  Once re-planted, prune the branches back and prepare for a spring and summer full of lovely roses!
